FRIBOURG. The weekend’s culture calendar runs from a club legend to a symphony orchestra, with free entry in between. Here are the five dates worth planning around.

DJ Krush at Fri-Son, Fribourg

The Japanese producer who helped define trip-hop and instrumental hip-hop played his only Swiss date of the tour on Friday night, presenting his album Saisei at Fri-Son. Thirty years into his career, DJ Krush remains a reference point for three generations of producers, and the Fribourg club, still one of the country’s essential small stages, was the night’s only stop in Switzerland.

One night of trip-hop, forty comic artists, and a quarter century of the boy wizard. October’s busiest culture weekend is also its cheapest.

COMET comic market, Lausanne

The third edition of the COMET brought around forty Swiss and international artists to Pyxis, Lausanne’s house of digital culture, on Saturday. The market for independent comics mixes stands, workshops, exhibitions and encounters, and entry is free all day, a deliberate choice by the organisers to keep the small presses small no longer.

Twenty-five years of Harry Potter, Fribourg

The Orchestre Horizon marks a quarter century since the first film with two performances of John Williams’ score in the grand hall of the ARENA cinemas, Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The concerts join a long Swiss line of sold-out film-with-orchestra nights, and family tickets for the Sunday matinee went first.

Une vie d’acteur, Biel

At the Nebia theatre, Pierre Maillet travels through his own memories on a text Tanguy Viel wrote for him, an intimate tour of the cinema of the 1980s and 1990s directed by Émilie Capliez. The ticket doubles as a voucher: five francs off at the Filmpodium for Tootsie or Le Dernier Métro, and the same in reverse.

Gabi Hartmann at JazzContreband, Versoix

The singer and songwriter, often compared to Norah Jones and Melody Gardot, closed Saturday at the Caves de Versoix with songs from her second album, La femme aux yeux de sel, as part of the JazzContreband festival. Next weekend the culture pages turn to the Swiss Performing Arts Award ceremony in Aarau, where Circus Fahraway collects the prize nobody can apply for.
